Arsenal are trying hard to work out a deal to sign Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina this month, but according to Miguel Delaney of the Independent, the Serie A side are demanding £75 million for the services of the Serbian striker. Arsenal are proposing a structured deal, but Fiorentina aren’t interested in anything else than the full fee being paid straight up.
One of the most sought-after players currently in the market, the Serbia international has 16 Serie A goals in just 20 appearances this term, numbers identical to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah who tops the Premier League goalscoring chart at the moment.
Apparently, Arsenal are convinced that the proposed arrival of Vlahovic to the Emirates in this window would give them an edge in the race to secure top-four placement and finally return to the Champions League next term. This is why they are, in fact, willing to meet Fiorentina’s asking price and make Vlahovic their most expensive signing ever, but they need the Viola to agree to a structured payment of the £75m fee. What the Gunners are proposing is to pay the whole amount over a period of four years, which is something they consider affordable, even without the need to sell Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Another reason why the club want Vlahovic now rather than in the summer is closely related to the race for Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland. A number of top clubs across Europe intend to go all out to sign the Norwegian sensation, but in the end, Haaland can have only one destination. Those who miss out are widely expected to turn their attention to Vlahovic if he’s still at Fiorentina at that time. Let’s face it, if the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain enter the fray, the Gunners aren’t likely to be able to match their financial powers.
There is still time before the January window shuts, so let’s see what happens.
