Fascinating statistic from the Fulham game

Posted on October 09, 2018 by Harry Kettle

Arsenal walked through Fulham at the weekend with, arguably, their most impressive performance to date this season. They put a beating on the Cottagers and while they certainly struggled at points in the first half, they managed to overcome any adversity that was put in their path – and in the end, they registered their ninth consecutive victory in all competitions.

Making history

Still, while the performance itself was great, we want to focus on one statistic in particular: Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored and assisted for Arsenal against Fulham – which is the first time in Premier League history two substitutes have scored and assisted for a team in a single game. As bizarre and specific as that may seem, we can’t help but be extremely impressed by that.

Unai Emery has already proven himself to be a very capable manager abroad, but now, moves like this are starting to prove that he can get the job done in the Premier League, too. Despite the fact that the Gunners were in a comfortable position they certainly weren’t home and dry, which is why he took it upon himself to make two big substitutions in order to see how it would impact the game. Given that Ramsey is on the verge of leaving the club and Aubameyang has had his critics as of late, you could certainly argue that it was a risky move.

Getting the job done

Still, both men put that to one side in the name of doing what’s right for the club, and you’d have to imagine the manager has a role to play in that. After all, respecting the boss is an absolute necessity if you want to find success at this level, which seems to have been one of the reasons why the Gunners have been on such a strong run as of late.

We still maintain that we’d like to see Ramsey leave courtesy of the farcical nature of his contract negotiations, but at the very least, he’s putting in a good shift in his last few months with the club which is all you can really ask of the guy at this point. Aubameyang, on the other hand, joins Lacazette in being one of the most impressive strikers that we’ve seen at the Emirates in years.

Who impressed you more at the weekend – Aubameyang or Ramsey?
