It’s been almost nine months since fans were allowed to head into football stadiums on a week-by-week basis, but now, it appears as if we’re just a matter of days away from supporters being able to return. That’s because it was announced yesterday that when the national lockdown ends next week and we’re placed back into the tier system in England, those in tier 1 and 2 will be able to have between 2,000 and 4,000 fans back in their ground.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “This is a big step forward for sport.
“Bringing grassroots sport back was my number one priority, so I’m pleased we are reopening sports and gyms in every tier, in recognition of the significant health benefits.
“I’m also delighted we are able to get the turnstiles turning sooner than expected, taking a cautious approach and starting with the lowest-risk areas first.
“I’m confident that sports will take every step to ensure their fans are safe and fans will play their part and look out for each other until we can safely get everyone back in.”
Tier 1: Maximum of 4,000 fans
Tier 2: Maximum of 2,000 fans
Tier 3: no fans
It may not be exactly what fans had been hoping for, but it’s definitely a start – and it is starting to feel like there is a real light at the end of the tunnel.
Will you be hoping to get back into the Emirates before the end of the year?
