Fabrizio Romano: Interest in Edu and Saka, both focused on Arsenal

Fabrizio Romano has put out an interesting new video where he talks about certain rumours and behind-the-scenes discussions involving Arsenal. The two topics the Italian transfer specialist covers there are technical director Edu and, unsurprisingly, Bukayo Saka.

The Gunners appointed their former midfielder into the role in July, 2019, in a very difficult moment. His first real task was to try and make sense of the situation that was the work of the trio of Ivan Gazidis, Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi, and steer the club in the right direction from thereon. Arsenal had just lost the Europa League final to Chelsea and their hopes of returning to the Champions League were dashed, and a couple of months later, Unai Emery was sacked and Mikel Arteta appointed.

As Romano points out, Edu was the man who insisted Arteta needed backing after the abysmal start to the 2021/22 campaign, when three straight defeats had the team at the bottom of the table. The determination to stick with the manager has obviously paid off big, with Arsenal currently topping the Premier League table four points ahead of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in second and third place, respectively.

Edu deserves a lot of credit for turning things around at Arsenal. The transfers he’s negotiated lately have only improved his reputation, and it’s no real surprise that, as Romano says, there are clubs considering making an effort to prize the Brazilian away from the club. Mind, those who would want Edu in their camps are doing all the considering at this point, not Edu who remains fully focused on taking the next step here, with Arsenal.

The situation is similar in a way with Saka. The 21-year-old winger has been playing magnificently this term and is one of the main ‘culprits’ for Arsenal’s current position in the table. Naturally, clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are following his situation closely, in case an opening for them to exploit can be identified.

However, the focus of Saka and his representatives is still Arsenal. The talks about a new contract for the England international have been going on since February, and at this point, there is a positive feeling on both sides.
