Last night marked England’s 1000th international as a senior team and that, in itself, is an achievement. Thankfully the even bigger achievement was qualifying for UEFA Euro 2020, and they did so in style with an utterly ruthless display of attacking force in the form of a 7-0 battering against Montenegro. The punishment started early as England got into a rhythm within a matter of minutes, and by half time, the Three Lions managed to stick five past their opposition – and they only needed a point to get themselves over the finish line in the first place.
England boss Gareth Southgate was clearly chuffed with his team’s performance, as you can probably imagine, given how fluent they were – even in the face of what has been a pretty difficult week for them.
“We played so well in the first half. I know France have taken a long time tonight to get a victory against Moldova.
“We have won a group that we should win but we have won it comfortably and we have found a way of playing against those lower-ranked teams that defend in numbers. We have found a way to break them down, which maybe in the past we haven’t.”
One of the biggest question marks that people have had, and by people we mean Arsenal fans, is a real lack of any presence from Gunners players throughout the squad. There are certainly young English stars within Arsenal’s ranks, but it doesn’t appear as if they’re quite ready to make the step up yet.
Arsenal need to be producing these world class stars again from within their own youth system and while that’s going to take time, we think they’ve got it in them.
How do you feel about Arsenal’s lack of presence in the England setup?
