Emery appointment was a mistake – Lehmann

Posted on June 11, 2020 by Veselin Trajkovic

Following the departure of Arsene Wenger in 2018 after 22 years at the helm, Arsenal appointed Unai Emery in his place, and former Gunner Jens Lehmann believes it was a mistake from the start.

Emery’s 18-month tenure at the Emirates has widely been labelled as ‘dismal’, though that may be just a tad harsh on the Spaniard. After all, he did lead the team to the Europa League final last season. On the other hand, there can be no denying that he had lost the thread towards the end, as Arsenal started the 2019/20 with the worst record since 1992. By the time he was dismissed, Arsenal were already in eighth place, having spent around £130 million on new players the previous summer.

Lehmann was a part of the coaching staff at the time when Wenger left the club and was eventually forced to follow the Frenchman out the door, as Emery wished to bring his own staff with him. The ex-goalkeeper says it was a mistake from the start, as they had chosen ‘the wrong guys’, who couldn’t even speak English. He believes that the people running the club couldn’t comprehend his knowledge of football, nor what it means to win for Arsenal – something the German certainly knew.

Emery spoke about what went wrong for him at Arsenal, blaming some of the players for certain things and pointing out that the club had already been on a decline when he arrived. He believes he had actually started to turn things around. Lehmann, on the other hand, says Emery was lucky to have been given the chance at all and that the former Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain boss simply isn’t good enough for the job.

Things have certainly started to look better for Arsenal since Mikel Arteta took over from Emery, but it still feels far too early to make any kind of reasonable judgement.
