David Luiz, Pablo Mari, Cedric Soares and Dani Ceballos have all agreed deals to remain at Arsenal, the club have officially confirmed.
There has been much debate over the future of David Luiz in recent months. Long after it was reported that his commitment to Arsenal on arrival from Chelsea last summer was set to keep him at Emirates for two years, it transpired that the deal was actually for one year with the club having the option to extend it for one more. The option expired, but head coach Mikel Arteta was apparently keen to keep hold of the experienced Brazilian past this summer.
Arteta’s stance caused much debate following Luiz’s disastrous showing in the Manchester City defeat, but the Spaniard obviously got his way. It’s all to the good – the boss should be granted his wishes in this department whenever possible, but it remains to be seen whether the 33-year-old repays his trust.
Fullback Cedric Soares was brought to the club on a half-season loan from Southampton in January, with the aim of providing cover for Hector Bellerin on the right defensive flank, but he’s yet to play competitively for Arsenal due to long-term injury absence. However, as his contract with the Saints now expires, he will remain at the Emirates on a permanent basis.
The same goes for Pablo Mari, who has so far proven to be a bargain. The centre-back, whose performances for the Gunners have been impeccable, has been here on loan from Flamengo with an option to buy, and it seems Arsenal have now triggered that option which should indeed be the best piece of news of the lot.
In addition to these three deals, Dani Ceballos has agreed to stay at the Emirates on loan from Real Madrid for the rest of the 2019/20 Premier League season. The midfielder will certainly have a big role to play in the remaining fixtures.
