Arsenal goalkeeper Damian Emiliano Martinez has joined Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on a month’s loan.
The 21-year old signed for the Gunners in 2010, but has so far been unable to force himself into the first-team and hopes to gain some valuable match experience while out on loan.
Martinez has featured for Argentina’s U17s and U20 – making two and five appearances respectively.
This season, he’s made two appearances for the Arsenal development side, but has grown frustrated at the lack of senior opportunities presented to him.
Manager Arsene Wenger cited how the chance of potential match experience is vital for his development, as he’s currently low down in the goalkeeper pecking order with the Gunners with Szczesny, Fabianski, and Viviano all ahead of him.
His age will suggest he has plenty of time ahead of him, and should he impress while out on loan with Wednesday, manager Arsene Wenger could well make a mental note on the 21-year old.
The Sheffield Wednesday do have Chris Kirkland as their number one goalkeeper, but Martinez will provide emergency cover as their second choice is teenager Cameron Dawson.
Martinez will be available if needed for The Owls’ next game away to fellow Championship strugglers Bolton Wanderers. Wednesday are 10/11 to beat Bolton.
