Arsenal fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Watford at the weekend as their momentum was wiped away. Troy Deeney’s penalty cancelled out Per Mertesacker’s opener before Tom Cleverley smashed home the winner in injury time. The loss saw the London side fall further behind Manchester City at the top as the pressure was piled on Arsene Wenger and his side.
A cause for concern was the lack of backbone Arsenal displayed, with the team yet again unable to win a game that they scored first in. Worryingly, their defensive shape was non-existent for Watford’s winner, with players all too eager to push further up the pitch, allowing space for the hosts to exploit.
Few players were spared the anger of the fans, with Granit Xhaka in particular targetted, but Mesut Ozil was once again the man that the supporters rounded on. Indeed, his actions on the pitch as he missed a one-on-one chance coupled with his laziness in defence was awful.
It has now been claimed by the Daily Mail that a number of the German’s teammates think that Ozil’s days at the London club are numbered, with the likelihood of the midfielder renewing his contract slim indeed.
Ozil has been the target of a lot of criticism during his time with Arsenal as his brilliance has been overshadowed by his laziness. Too often he is seen shirking his defensive duties or being anonymous in attack, and many fans have had enough of his inconsistency.
While Ozil is clearly a talented player, Arsenal has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for the creatively gifted but flawed midfielder.
