Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has signed a new contract with the north London club. The move comes after new Gunners boss Unai Emery reportedly told the former Southampton star he is in his plans for next season.
Chambers has struggled to nail down a starting position in North London since moving to the Gunners in 2014 from Southampton.
Not lived up to his supposed potential yet
The reason that Chambers has not yet nailed down a regular starting position is that he has not yet lived up to his supposed potential. Chambers arrived at Arsenal as one of the most promising young defenders in the country.
However, at 23, he has yet to fully convince that that he can perform well on a regular enough basis for the team from north London.
Ironically, the most consistent campaign of his Premier League career so far was when he spent a season on-loan at Middlesbrough. The defender looked very solid, and maybe he enjoyed playing away from the pressure of playing for Arsenal.
Last season chambers started just ten Premier League games. Bearing in mind that the Gunners had defensive problems, it is not a great sign for Chambers future with the Gunners.
Maybe Emery can help develop his potential
New Gunners boss Unai Emery had a reputation for getting the best out of players at the likes of Valencia and Sevilla before his big move to PSG two summers ago.
Maybe he can help the defender fulfil his potential in the next few seasons. At 23, he is still a relatively young player. Chambers has time to improve and develop into a far better player in the future.
At Southampton and at times during his Arsenal career he has shown lots of potential. He needs to play on a regular basis but to do that he needs to prove he can handle playing Premier League football.
Defensive improvement needed
Arsenal were a shambles at the back at times last season. The summer additions of Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis show that the management knows that the defence needs to improve next season.
If Chambers can develop into the player that many thought he would when he first arrived, then he could provide a possible solution to the Gunners defensive problems. However, Chambers needs to improve immensely to nail down a regular starting position in the Gunners team next season.
Will Calum Chambers play more first-team football next season?
