The rumour mill has begun to swirl and Arsenal fans around the world are now facing the very real prospect of players coming in, and players going out. Now while that was always going to be the case it’s still an intriguing position for them to find themselves in, if only because we want to see how they’re going to deal with it.
Nonetheless, we’re not here to talk about the bigger picture: because we’re here to talk about a specific transfer that intrigues us immensely – and not necessarily for all the right reasons. Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge many times over the course of the last few years, but now, there’s a rumour that seems to be much more credible.
The rumour, of course, links him with a switch to Arsenal. Aside from the fact that this would likely cause even more tension between the two London rivals, we find this to be intriguing. It’s no secret that Arsenal are in need of some more defenders because their options aren’t great at the moment to put it lightly, but is this really the best use of their resources?
Pros and the cons
Once upon a time Gary Cahill was considered to be an extremely capable Premier League defender: but that time has been and gone. Sure, the Blues haven’t given him all the opportunities in the world this season, but there’s a reason for that. The Englishman has had a really successful career by all accounts, and he should seriously consider the prospect of hanging it up in a few years time. Of course, even if he does decide to do that, the opportunity to join the Gunners and make one final push for the top four is still there for the taking.
We don’t think it’s the best of transfers but if he’s going to be used as nothing more than a back-up, then maybe we can get on board with it. This still isn’t what we’d consider to be an ideal circumstance but desperate times call for desperate measures, and we’ve kind of learned to just let things play out where Unai Emery and transfers are concerned.
Do you think Arsenal should buy Gary Cahill?
