Barcelona linked with Arsenal full-back

Posted on September 12, 2018 by David Nugent

No, not the old recycled story of how Barcelona are looking to sign Spanish full-back Hector Bellerin. It is the Spaniard on the other flank of the Gunners defence that is interesting the Catalan giants.

Yes, Nacho Monreal is interesting the Catalan giants according to the Guardian rumour page, which offers no apologies for the lack of source for their information.

Monreal one of Arsenals most consistent performers

Nacho Monreal does not often receive plaudits for his performances for Arsenal. However, over the past few seasons, he has been one of the most consistent players for the North London side.

Whether he has played as a centre-back, full-back or wing-back, he has never let the team down. I doubt Arsenal will be looking to part with the former Malaga ace anytime soon.

In fact, the news may just be a story put out by Monreal’s agents, as the Spaniard is due for contract talks with the north London club.

Barcelona need a backup for Jordi Alba

Spanish international Jordi Alba has been first-choice left-back at Barcelona for what seems like forever. Until recently, the former Valencia star was also first-choice left-back for his country.

However, new Spain head coach Luis Enrique left the star out of his latest Spain squad completely, instead using Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso in the position.

Despite his international snub, Alba looks unlikely to lose his starting spot in Catalonia. However, he does need a back-up after his former back-up France international Lucas Digne headed to Premier League Everton in search of regular first-team football.

It seems that Monreal is on Barcelona’s wish list of replacements for Digne. At 32 years old, he is only likely to be a short-term solution for the Catalan giants.

Monreal happy at Arsenal

While many players dream of playing for a club like Barcelona Monreal seems settled in north London. He is a first-choice player and if he did move back to his homeland, his playing time would be limited.

He would get the chance to win the big trophies with the Catalan giants, though. It is a difficult one. The Spanish international has never said he wanted to leave the Gunners and judging by his perceived character, he is very unlikely to either. In fact, he recently stated how happy is at the north London club.

I can see Monreal signing a new deal with the club and snub the supposed interest from Barcelona.

Will Nacho Monreal sign a new deal with Arsenal?
