While the focus of the football world is on Russia right now for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, there have actually been quite a few interesting developments back home in North London. In fact, one Argentine in particular who is currently taking part in the tournament could be an Arsenal player by the time he flies home. No, guys, get your head out of the clouds – we aren’t referring to Lionel Messi.
We are, of course, talking about Ever Banega. The midfielder’s agent is set to fly to the Emirates in order to discuss the possibility of a transfer, and while Banega isn’t one of the names that immediately jumped off the page for many fans, he’d be a great addition to the side. He has experience playing for a series of clubs who have a similar stature to the Gunners, and beyond that, it just feels like he’d be a calming presence in the heart of the Arsenal midfield.
Tottenham Hotspur fans have already been parading around on Twitter, suggesting that Arsenal are signing low-level Europa League players as opposed to players who are going to help them push for the title. While it’s cute to see that Spurs are still thinking about their bitter rivals over the summer break, it feels like they should probably worry a little bit more about holding onto their star players before they fly off to join some of Europe’s finest.
In terms of Banega, though, things appear to be looking up. His agent wouldn’t be flying over to England for no reason, and while a summer holiday is entirely possible, it seems far too convenient. Banega has ties to new Arsenal boss Unai Emery, who has been ruthless in trying to bring in the players he wants, and if he’s interested in the 29-year-old then there’s quite clearly a good reason for that.
Given Argentina’s current World Cup status, too, this could end up being a home run for the Gunners. Not only would they be able to get the deal done in the next few weeks, but in all likelihood, Banega will probably be on the next flight home as Argentina find themselves on the verge of elimination following their 3-0 loss at the hands of Croatia last night. So Arsenal fans – start praying that Alex Iwobi can lead Nigeria to two unlikely victories in the next few days.
Are you excited by Ever Banega’s possible arrival?
