Aubameyang wants Dembele at Arsenal?

Posted on August 04, 2020 by Veselin Trajkovic

According to reports in France, captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wants Arsenal to sign Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona this summer.

Despite the 2019/20 season now being well and truly over, despite the FA Cup residing safely at the Emirates and a place in next term’s Europa League bearing Arsenal’s name, the future of Aubameyang is yet to be resolved. The Gabonese forward scored two goals in the final at Wembley, enough to overturn Christian Pulisic’s opener and clinch the trophy, and his quality and contribution to this team cannot be disputed.

But  his contract has entered its final 12 months and the club are reportedly reluctant to risk losing him for free next summer. They’ve been working hard on persuading him to pen a new deal, and it is believed that the player needs to be assured of the club’s ambitions before putting his name on the dotted line. And according to Le10Sport, one way of doing that would be to sign Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona.

Dembele arrived to the Catalan club in the summer of 2017 for over €100 million, as a young talent who was supposed to replace Neymar on the left attacking flank. But while the talent is quite obviously there, frequent and rather severe injuries have so far prevented him from getting anywhere near that mark. There have also been reports of a slight lack of discipline on his part. Overall, the 23-year-old has worn the Blaugrana shirt 75 times in all competitions over a period of three years; only nine times in 2019/20.

Barcelona might be (or not) looking to cut their losses when it comes to Dembele, but even if so, they aren’t very likely to allow him to leave cheap. As for Arsenal and their questionable transfer funds, it’s very hard to imaging spending a lot on an injury-prone player they basically don’t need. Attacking flanks are probably the best covered positions in Mikel Arteta’s squad at the moment.

All in all, the report seems like nothing more than an attempt by the French media to spark some talk about one of their international players.
