Atletico Madrid are keen to secure a loan deal for Lucas Torreira, according to Sky Sports, and what’s more, they’re increasingly confident about getting such a deal done soon.
The two clubs are currently locked in negotiations. While the Spanish side wish for a temporary move at this point, Arsenal are keen to make it permanent with Torreira having no place in manager Mikel Arteta’s plans, and they need the funds potentially generated through that sale in order to sign a midfielder who would be of more use to the Gunners’ boss. Along with outcasts Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi, Torreira is yet to appear on a matchday team-sheet this season.
Arsenal remain interested in their long-standing target, Atletico’s Thomas Partey, but apparently, the Ghana international will not be a part of any Torreira deal. Nonetheless, if they receive a fee for a permanent departure of the Uruguay international, they would be able to reinvest it to partly fund Partey’s release clause of €50 million. Atletico remain firm that Partey will not leave the Wanda Metropolitano for anything less than that.
And while the talks between the clubs progress, Arsenal are considering alternative targets, just in case this road leads them to a dead-end. One of them is apparently Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, though it has to be said that the Algerian is a different sort of player to Partey altogether. Chelsea’s Jorginho is another one being looked at, and one whose role in his team is usually more similar to that of the Atletico man.
But as for Jorginho, who came close to joining Manchester City in 2018 when Arteta still assisted Pep Guardiola at the Etihad, he seems to have secured a firm place in Frank Lampard’s plans at Stamford Bridge. That would make any attempt to prize him away difficult indeed.
