According to the Daily Express, Arsenal are willing to use Calum Chambers, Reiss Nelson and Carl Jenkinson as makeweights in a deal to sign Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha. Reports suggest that the Ivory Coast international is rated in the £80million bracket.
The purse strings are set to be tight again at Arsenal this summer, so using players as a makeweight may prove to be the answer for the Gunners.
Zaha would be a good signing for Arsenal
The Gunners are reportedly looking to bring in a wide man this summer. Zaha is developing into a very dangerous attacking player and has been the focal point of the Eagles attack for much of the season.
A record of ten goals and five assists in 34 top-flight appearances is not a stellar record. However, he has been playing in a Palace team that has badly struggled for goals in recent campaigns.
With better players offering support, the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, he could prove to be far more productive, despite his tendency to play as more of an individual than a team player.
Mixed feelings about potential exits
There is a lot of deadwood in the Arsenal squad that needs to leave so the Gunners can move onwards and upwards. Sorry to say, full-back Carl Jenkinson is amongst that deadwood.
At 27 years of age, he should well have moved on from the north London club in search of first-team football. However, despite loan spells the former Charlton defender has hung around Arsenal, making the odd appearance. The sad thing is that he probably would have been a regular starter for some teams in the middle to the bottom half of the top-flight table.
Chambers has shown his potential in flashes at Arsenal. However, the fact the 24-year-old was allowed to leave for Fulham on-loan last summer suggests that he is surplus to requirements at the club, despite a supposed a dearth of centre-backs.
Reiss Nelson is a different kettle of fish. At just 19 years of age, the young winger is one of the brightest prospects at Arsenal. It would seem strange to let him leave for Palace unless it was just a temporary move. I cannot see Nelson leaving the north London club on a permanent basis this summer.
Arsenal the favourites to sign Zaha
Despite Palace supposedly looking for a big fee for Zaha, Arsenal are the favourites to sign the winger at odds of 5/6 this summer. The forward would be a good signing, but the Gunners definitely have other areas that must be looked at this summer.
Only time will tell if Zaha will be plying his trade at Arsenal next season. At the moment, it really could go either way.
Would Wilfried Zaha be a good signing for Arsenal this summer?
