Arsenal’s ongoing pursuit of a big-name summer signing has now led them to Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and winger Angel Di Maria.
According to BBC Sport, the Gunners are willing to part with £40M in order to procure Benzema’s signature.
However, many feel it’s yet another fruitless endeavour, as Real Madrid will be left without any senior strikers in the side should Benzema be sold this summer.
Until Real Madrid enter the market for a new striker, it’s very unlikely the France international will be joining the Premier League outfit.
Angel Di Maria has more of a chance of signing for the Gunners, after the La Liga runners-up are nearing the signing of Tottenham Hotspur forward Gareth Bale. The Argentine international is worried Bale’s imminent arrival would see him playing second-fiddle, and the 25-year old could be keen on finding regular first-team football this season as a result.
No official bid has been made for either player, but sources closes to Arsenal are suggesting there is genuine interest. While ambitious, it’s unlikely the Premier League side stand a realistic chance of procuring either signature, and questions are being asked why Arsenal aren’t trying to sign realistic targets.
The transfer window closes in just over a week, and ex-Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo, 20, is the side’s only signing this summer.
