Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho has been impressing in this summer’s U21 European Championships with Portugal U21s, continuing on from an impressive domestic season, which will set a host of clubs on red alert for his services when he returns from international duty.
The 23-year-old has been linked with Arsenal for the last 12 months, and has shown exactly why with a series of brilliant showings in this year’s youth tournament. Carvalho is a defensive midfielder with a physical presence, who provides the protection to his backline, as well as sometimes driving deep in possession. He’s an imposing figure in the middle of the park, and has been outstanding in the Portuguese top-flight this season.
Carvalho’s asking price is said to be in excess of £30M, which would certainly put Arsenal off signing him, but manager Arsene Wenger is said to be a big admirer in his talents. The long-serving Frenchman is alleged to have sent his scouts to watch the Portuguese star in action in the U21 European Championships this summer, and will have been impressed with how well he’s done in leading the side to the final.
There are a lot of teams interested in his services, which means Arsenal have stiff competition if they are to sign their man. Portugal U21s are 4/11 to win this summer’s U21 European Championships final.
