Arsenal have held talks with the agent of OGC Nice’s Jean-Michael Seri as they contemplate moving for the midfielder this summer, according to Sky Sports.
Seri came close to a move to Barcelona last summer but the deal fell through at the last minute. Apart from the Gunners, Chelsea are also said to be monitoring the situation.
Seri spent two years in Portugal with Pacos de Ferreira before moving to Nice in 2015. Since then, he has made 121 appearances and scored 11 goals for the French club in all competitions. In 2017, he was named in the League 1 Team of the Year along with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Marco Veratti, Edinson Cavani, and now Arsenal’s very own Alexandre Lacazette. He has also accumulated 18 caps for Ivory Coast.
The 26-year-old has been linked with a number of top clubs recently, and it seems Arsenal have taken an actual step towards securing his signature.
Valued at £40million, Seri is primarily a central midfielder, highly mobile and skilled, able to take players on as well as keep possession under pressure. He might be viewed as a replacement for Jack Wilshere should his contract negotiations fail, but having both of them in the team would be a big bonus and a sign of intent.
After links with the 21-year-old SC Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu, a move for Seri certainly seems like a more ambitious one by the club as they seek quality additions to the team.
Raul Sanllehi is the man tasked with wrapping the deal up and has opened the dialog with Seri’s representatives. The Ivorian international is rated very highly by the Gunners’ director of football, but any potential deal would still need to wait on a new manager being appointed before it could be finalized.
That new manager, according to many reports at this point, will probably be former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta.
