Arsenal suffer further transfer setbacks

Posted on January 26, 2022 by Veselin Trajkovic

Arsenal’s attempts to reinforce their ranks this summer certainly cannot be said to be going the right way up to this point. Desperately needing a striker, the club reportedly held a strong interest in Dusan Vlahovic, but the Serbia international seems to have chosen Juventus as his destination, following Fiorentina’s decision to accept a €75 million bid from the Old Lady.

As for the midfield section, the need to add some proper cover or competition for the duo of Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka is obvious, and the club were said to be involved in talks with Juventus over Arthur Melo, and to have expressed an interest in Olympique Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes.

However, Lyon have reportedly accepted a €40m offer for his services which came from St. James Park, and the 24-year-old Brazilian is set to undergo a medical ahead of the proposed move to the North-East of England. As for Arthur, Juventus made it clear that they wouldn’t let the former Barcelona man leave without acquiring a suitable replacement, not with former Gunner Aaron Ramsey on his way out and Aston Villa supposedly pushing to sign Rodrigo Bentacur as well.

Meanwhile, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Arsenal remain interested in Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak, as well as Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Ahead of the winter camp trip to Dubai, Manager Mikel Arteta has flown to the USA to speak directly to the club owners and discuss several issues, with the ongoing transfer business believed to be high on the agenda.

The problem with the interest in Calvert-Lewin is, as you might expect, Everton. The Toffees have had a torrid season so far and could easily get involved in the race against relegation soon, on top of which, they have no manager after sacking Rafa Benitez. Selling their top striker at this point probably wouldn’t be wise from their perspective, regardless of the player’s wishes.

The situation is similar with Isak, with Sociedad currently engaged in the top-four battle in La Liga.
