According to Don Balon, Arsenal are one of two sides reportedly keen on signing Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata in the winter transfer window. The Gunners were interested in the 23-year-old back in the summer but instead opted for Deportivo La Coruna forward Lucas Perez as they were priced out for the Real centre-forward.
However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is said to still be weighing up an approach for the striker as he looks to turn his side into challengers for major honours following their upturn in form in all competitions. Morata has scored two goals for Real Madrid this season, but particularly impressed during his two-season spell with Juventus.
The 23-year-old scored and created 27 goals in 27 Serie A starts for the perennial champions, which led to his return to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer. He’s already made four Spanish La Liga starts, and has made two cameo appearances from the bench in the Champions League. When Karim Benzema fully returns for Real, Morata is likely to be marginalised which could see him seeking move away.
However, it’s unknown if Arsenal really have the funds to compete with the European giants, after already spending nearly £100M on new recruits – Granit Xhaka (£38M from Borussia Monchengladbach), Shkodran Mustafi (£35M from Valencia), Lucas Perez (£17M from Deportivo La Coruna), Takuma Asano (£3.5M from Sanf. Hiroshima) and Rob Holding (£2.5M from Bolton Wanderers).
Will Arsenal really make a move for Alvaro Morata in January?
