Arsenal could snap up transfer target on a free

Posted on June 12, 2018 by David Nugent

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal could sign highly-rated Portuguese winger Gelson Martins on a free transfer after the youngster reportedly cancelled his contract with Sporting CP along with William Carvalho and Bruno Fernandes. Martins has previously been linked with a £25million move to north London.

Sporting are facing a major situation after a number of masked supporters broke into the team’s training facility at the end of last month. They proceeded to assault players and staff.

The situation has led to the clubs star players to reportedly exercise a get out clause in their contracts to exit the club without a fee. However, the situation is unlikely to be a simple one, so signing any Sporting players may not prove simple.

Highly-rated winger

Martins would certainly prove a bargain signing if the Gunners could capture his signature, especially on a free transfer. Arsenal are unlikely to splash out big money on signing players as boss Unai Emery and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat look to unearth gems on a limited budget.

The 23-year-old Martins is highly-rated. He scored 11 goals and produced nine assists in all competitions last season. The winger has also been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool in the past. The fact that Martins is reportedly available on a free transfer could also work against the Gunners, though, as other clubs may offer him bigger wages to join them.

Arsenal are well covered in the attacking third with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Ozil and Alex Iwobi available to boss Emery. However, the Gunners sold attackers Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott in January, so could do with reinforcements.

Would be a shrewd signing

Arsenal transfer policy is obviously not to splash the cash in their efforts to return to the top-four next season, something the Gunners are odds of 2/1 to achieve next season.

Signing a relatively young player like Martins who will no doubt develop in the next few seasons looks to be a shrewd move. It may not be the sort of marquee signing that Arsenal fans would hope for, but it would be hard for Arsenal to turn down a player like Martins on a free transfer.

It is unclear if Martins will be plying his trade in north London next season. However, signing Martins on a free transfer would be a win-win for the Gunners.

Will Arsenal sign Gelson Martins this summer?
