According to the Daily Telegraph, Arsenal are set to renew their interest in Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette. The paper claims that the Gunners have been in touch with the striker’s current club to hold talks over a potential deal that could cost the north London club close to £60million.
The French international is one of a plethora of strikers seemingly linked with the club on a bi-annual basis. His name is usual in the same category of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain when it came to Arsenal being linked with strikers.
In truth, the other three are highly unlikely to consider a move to north London, with the incentive of Champions League football now gone at Arsenal. Lacazette is probably in the level down from the aforementioned trio.
This summer Arsenal have a good chance signing the striker, as he reportedly wants to leave the French club. He has already seen a move to Atletico Madrid collapse this summer, so he is available.
Has scored lots of goals in Ligue One
The striker has been very consistent in front of goal for Lyon in Ligue One and last season scored 37 goals in all competitions for OL. However, the French top-flight is no doubt inferior to many of the top European leagues, including the Premier League.
The top two Monaco and PSG are very good teams, while Nice are also decent, but beyond that the standard seems very debatable. We have seen many so-called prolific strikers arrive in the English top-flight from perceivably inferior leagues in recent years and fail completely.
There is one at nearby Tottenham in Dutch striker Vincent Janssen, who was prolific in the Eredivisie, arguably poorer than Ligue One, but has flopped like a jelly fish on a wet mattress at White Hart Lane.
Is he the standard that Arsenal needs?
I have to say I am not sure if he is the quality of player Arsenal needs to get back into the top four and mount a Premier League title challenge once again. If he was available for £20-30million he might be worth taking a gamble on, at a potential fee of £60million I am not sure.
I would love to be proven wrong, if Lacazette arrived at Arsenal. I would love him to fire the Gunners to the title and be as prolific as he was in France. However, I have a feeling that the France striker is unlikely to be wearing an Arsenal shirt next season.
Would Alexandre Lacazette be a good signing for Arsenal?
