According to the Daily Express, Arsenal look set to miss out on signing Barcelona flop Malcom this summer, with the winger now expected to join north London rivals Tottenham instead.
The Express story claims that the youngster has chosen to join Spurs ahead of the Gunners this summer. If he does join Tottenham, he will be their first signing since Lucas Moura joined from PSG in the January transfer window of 2018.
Malcom has struggled to nail down at a starting spot with the Blaugrana, who are looking to revamp their squad this summer after more Champions League disappointment.
Arsenal looking to strengthen out wide
Reportedly Arsenal boss Unai Emery is looking to strengthen on the wings this summer. Both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil have played out wide this season, as have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alex Iwobi.
However, both Ozil and Mkhitaryan reportedly could leave the Gunners this summer. The noises coming out of Ozil’s camp suggest that he wants to stay with the north London club this summer. It seems that Arsenal boss Emery may have other ideas over the future of the German.
Malcom was always going to struggle at Barcelona
Malcom’s summer move to Barcelona from Bordeaux was always destined for failure. The youngster had impressed in Ligue One. However, the step-up to one of the biggest clubs in the world was always too much.
The Brazilian looked set to join Everton prior to his summer move, only for Barcelona to come in and sign him at the last minute. The lure of Catalonia was obvious. However, it would have been wiser to join a Premier League club, as he was not ready to play for Barcelona.
His ego was writing cheques that his ability could not yet cash. Maybe in a few years’ time, Malcom will be ready to play for Barcelona, who despite their failure in the Champions League are still one of Europe’s best teams.
Trust in Emery to sign the right players this summer
In truth, Malcom has potential, but it would not be the end of the world if he ended up at Tottenham. He may be a top-class player in the future, but he is far from the finished article.
With Arsenal still searching for a director of football, it seems that the big transfer decisions will be left primarily to Gunners boss Unai Emery. Arsenal fans we just have to trust the Spaniard’s judgement when it comes to transfers this summer. If Emery was involved in last summers deals, then he did not do a bad job.
This summer’s transfer activity will be key to the Gunners success next season. The right moves are needed. It seems that Malcom will not be one of those right moves.
Would not signing Malcom this summer be a massive loss?
