According to the Daily Express, Arsenal are set to battle it out with London rivals Chelsea for the signature of Roma wonderkid Cengiz Under. A fee of around £54million has been mooted. The youngster cost Roma just £12million when he joined them from Istanbul Basaksehir back in 2017.
Clubs already circling Under
The young Turkish star has impressed for the Giallorossi this season and is reportedly attracting the interest of a number of big European clubs, and Chelsea!
The likes of German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both been strongly linked with moves for the attacking midfielder. However, the Bundesliga pair are unlikely to be able to compete with the financial muscle of the two English clubs.
Arsenal were fairly prudent in the transfer in the summer, which reports suggests could mean some big money arrivals in January and Under looks like he could be a realistic target for the Gunners.
Arsenal stacked with attacking midfielders
The current Arsenal squad has a number of players who can play in the attacking midfield positions. The likes of Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey can all play in the attacking midfield roles. Forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can also play on the left flank.
While the Gunners have been inconsistent at times in recent years, it remains to be seen if Under would give the team any more consistency. The youngster has been pretty consistent this season, scoring five goals and producing four assists, but he is still a young player, and they tend to lack consistency in their game.
The youngster may develop into a top player in the future. However, at the moment he is just a good young player, who has shown potential. I am not sure he has shown £54million’s worth of potential just yet though.
Arsenal should back Emery in January
Arsenal have made a bright start to life under new boss Unai Emery. It was never going to be an easy job replacing a stalwart life Arsene Wenger. However, the Spaniard has settled into his new job in impressive fashion.
The north London club should look to build on that good start by helping Emery reinforce his squad in January. There will no doubt be a number of names doing the rounds about Arsenal’s potential signings. I hope that Emery can strengthen his squad in the January transfer window. However, I doubt that Cengiz Under will be heading to Arsenal, well not for £54million anyway.
Would Cengiz Under be a good signing for Arsenal in January?
