According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are in talks with German club Dortmund about appointing their chief scout Sven Mislintat. The Gunners are reportedly set to appoint Mislintat as the head of recruitment working alongside chief scout Steve Rowley, who was rumoured to be set for the Emirates exit.
Reports last week claimed that Rowley was leaving the club. However, it now seems the pair are set to work together. The Sky report claims a deal is close for the Gunners to complete the move for the highly-rated Mislintat, who is nicknamed ‘the diamond’.
Unearthed a lot of gems
Mislintat’s nickname is apt, as he has signed a number of gems since joining the club back in 2007. BVB are famous for their shrewd dealing in the transfer market and the 47-year-old has played a major role in many of those clever transfer moves.
Some of the names to have arrived on Mislintat’s watch are Shinji Kagawa, Robert Lewandowski, Christian Pulisic and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang. They have all been star players at Signal Iduna Park in recent years.
Building a successful team
Arsenal and Dortmund are similar in the respect that they try to sign younger players and develop them into star players. Clever recruitment is the biggest part of that process.
BVB were able to challenge the much bigger spenders of Bayern Munich and beat them to the Bundesliga title.
This was due to clever recruitment leading to Jurgen Klopp to be able to field a team stronger enough to challenge the best, without spending hundreds of millions in the transfer market.
Arsenal are big spenders relatively compared to Dortmund. However, they are in a similar sort of situation in the Premier League. The Gunners are always being outspent and outdone by the big spenders of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.
Clever recruitment was the key to building a successful team during Arsene Wenger’s early days in north London and the addition of Mislintat to the team’s recruitment team may just help the Gunners prosper both on and off the field.
Arsene Wenger has struggled to bring success at Arsenal in the last decade, as the Gunners rivals have simply too much financial brawn.
The signing of the Dortmund man will not solve all Arsenal’s recruitment problems. However, having another highly impressive football man with an eye for a good player will certainly do the club no harm.
Will the addition of Sven Mislintat help Arsenal’s recruitment?
