According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal are set to battle it out with Chelsea and Italian club Lazio for Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu this summer.
The Mirror got their information from Turkish publication Aksam, who believe that the three clubs are competing for the highly-rated Turkey international.
Calhanoglu has reportedly been a transfer target for the Gunners for the last few seasons and has a minimum fee released clause in his contract of £32.5million.
Last season disrupted by ban
Calhanoglu was handed a four-month ban at the end of the season for breach of contract after he failed to move to Trabzonspor from Karlsruhe in 2011. The youngster decided to stay in Germany and continue his career.
The suspension meant that the 23-year-old made just 15 appearances in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen last season, scoring six goals and producing five assists. He also produced one goal and two assists in six Champions League appearances for the German side.
A player with a lot of potential
Calhanoglu is a player with a lot of potential at just 23 he has time on his side. His performances in the Bundesliga show that he is a very capable player and is only likely to get better with more experience.
His versatility and ability to play anywhere across the attacking midfield areas make him a potentially very useful player. Being a set-piece specialist is also a major weapon in the Turkish midfielder’s weaponry.
Arsenal seem to be well covered in midfield, although Chilean star Alexis Sanchez is likely to leave, which would leave a gap that would need to be filled. The youngster is unlikely to have the same influence as Sanchez, but he could be a decent all round signing.
How many players will arrive at Arsenal this summer?
Arsenal have already been linked with a lot of players this summer. However, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has stated that he will not be making wholesale changes to his squad. It is a very familiar story for Arsenal fans.
Wenger says he will not strengthen his squad for next season, despite the Gunners failing to achieve their objective of even getting close to winning the Premier League title. There may be some truth in the story or there may not be that the Gunners are interested in the Turkish star. For me, he would not be a terrible signing.
Should Arsenal be looking to sign Hakan Calhanoglu this summer?
