According to London.football’s Arsenal writer Charles Watt, the Gunners are interested in signing PSG midfielder Christopher Nkunku and Rennes winger Ismaila Sarr this summer.
The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for Nkunku in the January transfer window. While Sarr is a winger who has gone slightly under the radar of other big European clubs.
Arsenal looking to sign players in weak areas
Moves for the two Ligue One-based players would be logical ones considering the areas of the team that the Gunners need to strengthen this summer.
Nkunku would be regarded as the replacement for the outgoing Aaron Ramsey in midfield. The team from north London also need to strengthen their wide options, with their being a dearth of quality wide players at the club.
The Gunners will also be looking to strengthen at left-back, with the future of Spanish veteran Nacho Monreal still in doubt.
Nkunku and Sarr fit Arsenal’s profile
The Arsenal hierarchy look set to continue to limit the spending on transfers this summer. A budget of around £50million, similar this last summers, has been mooted. That means the Gunners are not going to splash out large amounts of cash on individual players as they did on the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette.
That means the people in charge of recruitment at the club need to find rough diamonds and polish them. Sarr and Nkunku fit into the profile of promising young players, who have not yet become superstar players. Neither will cost the earth at the minute because both are still young.
Both players are just 21 years of age, so just starting out in their careers. However, the pair are highly-rated, so the Gunners may have competition for their signatures. Premier League rivals Everton have been linked with a move for the winger, who has scored ten times and produced eight assists.
Emery will have a big part in transfers
Unai Emery is not the only one involved in recruitment at Arsenal. However, the Spaniard is now set for a more active after the exit of head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.
The former Valencia boss has a history of creating teams on smaller budgets. By Premier League standards, the £50million would be a small budget. Obviously, the Spaniard would have a bigger transfer kitty if the Gunners get into the Champions League.
If Emery has a bigger say in recruitment this summer, then targeting Sarr and Nkunku would make sense. The Spaniard managed Nkunku at PSG, while he must still have contacts in France regarding Sarr.
With Arsenal moving in the right direction under Emery, I believe the fans should have a little faith in the Spaniard if indeed he is the man responsible for signing players this summer.
Would Nkunku and Sarr be good summer signings for Arsenal?
