Arsenal are close to sealing the £30million signing of Monaco’s French international winger Thomas Lemar, according to the Daily Mail.
The report on the Mail’s website suggests that talks between the two clubs are going smoothly and that the youngster could be close to joining the Gunners.
An exciting addition
Lemar is no doubt an exciting young talent, just like a number of his current Monaco teammates. Last season was a breakthrough one for the 21-year-old, as he scored 14 times and produced 17 assists in all competitions from his left-wing position.
Lemar’s goals helped the team from the principality to become French champions and to the semi-finals of the Champions League. His performances reportedly caught the attention of a number of clubs including Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham, who have been heavily linked with the star.
Lemar was outstanding last season and he looks like he will only get better with experience and playing time. With England winger Theo Walcott linked with a move to West Ham, Lemar may seem like a younger alternative to the former Southampton star; even if Lemar does predominantly play on the left wing.
Will there be any truth in this one?
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a renowned feet dragger when it comes to dealing in the transfer market. He does not like to spend the clubs money, so the Gunners linked with all these new players makes very little sense.
A few days ago Arsenal were supposedly closing in on the signing of Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, while Nigerian youngster Henry Onyekuru was also a dead cert to be heading to the Emirates. However, it now looks like Lacazette could stay at Lyon, while Everton have nipped in and signed Onyekuru and sent the youngster out on loan to Anderlecht.
It would be nice if the Lemar to Arsenal story had legs. It would be nice if the Gunners could pull off the signing of a highly rated exciting young attacking midfielder. However, recent history tells us Arsenal do not make anything easy.
I hope there is some substance to the story, as I believe the youngster could be a star and a player that can add a lot to the Arsenal attack. It will be interesting to see how this story develops over the coming days.
One thing is for sure the Gunners cannot rest on their laurels, as their rivals could leave them behind if they do not strengthen this summer.
Will Thomas Lemar become an Arsenal player this summer?
