According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are looking to sign Tottenham’s Belgian centre-back Toby Alderweireld this summer. The 30-year-old will available for a fee of around £25million, the amount of his contract release clause.
Alderweireld has fallen out of favour at Arsenal’s rivals because of his refusal to sign a new deal with the club. Reports claim that Tottenham are not willing to meet the centre-backs contract demands, which has led to the defender looking for a club elsewhere.
Alderweireld be a superb signing
Even the most ardent Arsenal fan could not claim that Alderweireld would not be a superb signing. A few seasons ago, the 30-year-old was considered one of the finest centre-backs in the English top-flight. His partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen also one of the best in the Premier League.
Injury-problems and his contract stand-off has led to him playing a lot less than had in previous seasons. The former Southampton star would get into most team’s defences in the Premier League.
Arsenal are in need of central defensive reinforcements this summer. Alderweireld is arguably better than most of the Gunners’ current centre-backs. He would walk into Unai Emery’s starting line-up.
Highly unlikely to happen
I am not sure how this transfer would go down with the two sets of fans. I for one would love to see Alderweireld in an Arsenal shirt. If he was a player of a similar ability and experience who was not a Spurs player, then I am sure Arsenal fans would-be all-in favour of the deal.
It is not just the fact that the centre-back plays for a rival that will curtail this deal. Arsenal are also reportedly not alone in their interest in Alderweireld. Manchester United, Barcelona and Inter have all been linked with moves for the Belgian.
All the above clubs will have bigger financial budgets for the summer transfer window. That means they would be able to offer the defender a bigger and better wage packet.
I have no doubts that Arsenal will make a move for a new centre-back this summer. In fact, that is the Gunners priority in the transfer market. However, I am 90 per cent sure that centre-back will not be Alderweireld.
You can never be a hundred per cent with these things, as strange things can happen in football. I believe the Gunners will be shopping elsewhere for a brand-new shiny centre-back this summer.
Is Toby Alderweireld a realistic transfer target for Arsenal?
