Arsenal linked with Lille star Jonathan David
Arsenal are one of the clubs credited with interest in LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David, according to a recent report coming from Give Me Sport.
David broke fully onto the scene in France during the first half of last season, staying in the race for the Ligue 1 top scorer award for a while before his form eventually dropped off to make way for six players to end up higher in that list.
Nonetheless, the 22-year-old is obviously extremely talented and continues to attract attention of top clubs across Europe. Apart from Arsenal, the report names Tottenham Hotspur and Everton as interested clubs in England, and it mentions the figure of €40 million (around £35m) as the starting point for the potential price, though it could hit the roof if David plays a fine tournament in Qatar for Canada.
As for Arsenal and their need for another young striker, a potential arrival of David probably wouldn’t be considered good news by Eddie Nketiah, who is currently the second choice as the central attacker behind Gabriel Jesus. That status of his could be in danger with David around.
With that in mind, as well as the effort put into convincing Nketiah to sign a new contract only a few months ago, it wouldn’t make much sense for the Gunners to spend a vast amount of money on David right now. The need for a new winger and a defensive midfielder should also be taken into consideration.
On the other hand, if Arsenal are indeed preparing to go all the way to try and win the Premier League title, perhaps Nketiah’s status and individual sense of satisfaction at the club could be put aside for the greater good. The squad can hardly be too deep once the race comes down to the wire, and the ability to name quality players to start in the place of other quality players is likely to play a big role.
