Arsenal linked with a move for Atletico ‘keeper

Posted on March 26, 2018 by David Nugent

According to the Daily Express, Arsenal and Chelsea are set to go head-to-head this summer to sign Atletico Madrid’s highly-rated goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The Slovenian international has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in European football in the past few seasons. The stopper has a release clause of £88million in his contract and Atletico are not likely to let him go without a fight.

On Arsenal’s wanted list

The Express claims that Oblak is on the wanted list of both London clubs as they look to add to their goalkeeping options. The Gunners are claimed to have scouted Oblak on a number of occasions.

However, it takes very little scouting to know that Oblak is an outstanding ‘keeper. The fact that Atletico’s defence has remained one of the best in Europe with the Slovenian in-between the sticks tell you all you need to know.

Petr Cech on the wane

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has in the past been the world’s best goalkeeper. However, that was during his younger days at Chelsea. The Gunners signed him when his career was heading in the wrong direction.

Ironically, he was replaced at Chelsea by current number one Thibaut Courtois, who the Blues are making plans to replace in case he leaves for Real Madrid.

When Courtois replaced Cech as Chelsea number one, everybody knew that there was only one way for the Czech’s career to go and it was not up. A move to Arsenal seemed to be a good one for all parties involved.

However, the 35-year-old has experienced a poor campaign and made more costly mistakes than in past seasons. Although he has won the Gunners points with his saves, some of his displays have cost the team from north London too.

May miss out on Champions League football

Oblak will be tempted by a move to the Premier League this summer, as it could prove to be a lucrative one. However, Atletico Madrid will be able to offer him something that Arsenal and Chelsea may not be next season, Champions League football.

Both London clubs are on the fringes of the top-four, with Arsenal now odds of 100/1 to get into the Champions League via the league. However, like Atletico Arsenal are in the last eight of Europe’s elite competition.

Ironically, enough, with Atletico the favourites to the competition, the Gunners may need to beat the Spaniards somewhere along the way to lift the trophy.

Jan Oblak would be an upgrade on the ageing Cech and a good signing. Whether the Gunners can pull off the signing of the Slovenian remains to be seen.

Will Arsenal sign Jan Oblak this summer?
