According to several sources, Arsenal are ahead of the competition when it comes to the prospect of signing Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille OSC.
The 22-year-old central defender is reportedly rated at around €25 million, and Sky Sports claim they’ve been informed by the Ligue 1 club that three prospective buyers – Arsenal, Everton and Napoli – have met their asking price.
Having been promoted to the first team at Brazilian club Avai FC in 2016, Magalhaes joined Lille for a reported fee of €3m in January the following year. Since then he has had loan spells with Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb, before returning to the parent club in two years ago. Overall, he has made 52 first-team appearances for Lille, 34 of which came in 2019/20. He scored a goal in each of the the last two seasons. A highly talented youngster, Gabriel boasts much physical strength as well as skill on the ball, and his performances are said to have attracted the attention of many clubs around Europe.
As for other transfer business the Gunners are being credited at the moment, the possibility of re-signing midfielder Dani Ceballos on another loan from Real Madrid still reportedly remains. Stories of Philippe Coutinho and Thomas Partey have somewhat abated for the time being. Mesut Ozil is adamant that he is going nowhere. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly on the verge of signing a new contract. Winger Willian has already joined from Chelsea, which follows the permanent arrivals of defenders Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares, and the contract extension of David Luiz. Defender William Saliba is also with the team, after his one-year loan with former club Saint-Etienne expired.
With the potential addition of Gabriel, it seems Mikel Arteta’s back line is set for a complete new look, though it remains to be seen who the players to make way in the squad will be.
