According to the Telegraph, Arsenal have joined Manchester City and Leicester City in the race to sign West Bromwich Albion centre-back Jonny Evans. The 29-year-old was reported to be a target for the Gunners 12 months but Arsenal failed in their pursuit to procure his signature.
However, they stand a chance of bringing the former Manchester United defender to the Emirates Stadium for the right price. Arsenal are desperate for a centre-back this summer, with Gabriel Paulista being sold to Valencia, while Shkodran Mustafi could be on his way to the Italian Serie A.
Per Mertesacker has been on the bench for Arsenal this season, while Rob Holding’s starting place is far from safe. Calum Chambers looks unlikely to nail down a spot in the side, given manager Arsene Wenger preferred two left-backs playing as makeshift centre-backs in Sunday’s trip to Liverpool, so the Londoners need a trusted option at the heart of the defence.
Even Laurent Koscielny has struggled with injuries and can no longer be trusted to play 30+ league games in a season. As a result, Evans to Arsenal could be a possibility, despite the Northern Ireland international being at a club like West Brom.
If Wenger isn’t going to trust his current centre-backs in the defence, the Londoners will surely have to bring somebody in, rather than continue with full-backs playing centrally. Jonny Evans is 7/4 to join Arsenal this summer.
