Arsenal in bid for Ciprian Marica

Posted on August 06, 2013 by Crippy Cooke

Former Schalke 04 striker Ciprian Marica has been attracting interest from Arsenal this summer. The 27-year old is currently a free agent after being released from the Bundesliga side.

He plays as a second-striker and can also play out wide. He’s made 58 appearances for the Romanian national team, scoring 21 goals.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been keen to bolster his side’s attacking options, after Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh left to join AS Roma and Crystal Palace respectively. This leaves Arsenal thin on squad players, and Marica is reportedly close to joining the Gunners as a result.

‘Marica is a very good striker, a Romanian national player who has experience great football in the West. It’s normal to be targeted by big clubs the more that he remained free after having concluded the contract with Schalke 04.He is close to Arsenal, we’ll see this week.’ – Marica’s agent Giovani Becali.

Last season, he scored three goals in 13 games for Schalke. A host of clubs had also shown an interest in the 27-year old, but it appears Arsenal have won the race to sign him. While it may not be the high-profile lucrative signing Arsenal fans were hoping for, Marica does bring a wealth of experience to the table.

Arsenal have won the race to sign him? What race? He’s been a free agent for a while yet still hasn’t signed which implies there isn’t much interest in him. Arsenal won’t sign him, why replace the deadwood we’ve released with more? His agent is trying to generate interest and has use Arsenal to do so.

First of all this is a free signing. Secondly he is coming as a squad player to eke the numbers after the departures of our fringe players. Why then would anybody lose his head about him. I hope he will be better than those he is replacing. Going by his record he may not be a bad signing for a squad player. Let him prove his worth. You never know he could make first team.
