Arsenal icon claims the Gunners needed a striker in January

Posted on February 04, 2016 by David Nugent

Former-Arsenal icon and current Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has voiced a common complaint connected with the north London club by claiming that his former team needed to sign a striker in the winter transfer window.

Striker needed in January

Merson told Sky Sports News HQ“I was very disappointed Arsenal didn’t do more business on Deadline Day,”

“They needed a centre forward, they need to score goals. All the clubs down the bottom signed strikers to help them avoid relegation, and it’s the same if you’re going for titles, you need to score goals.

“If Olivier Giroud gets injured, Arsenal are in major trouble in terms of winning the league.”

The Gunners have the likes of Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez to cover Giroud, as well England international Danny Welbeck who is set to return from injury.

Oliver Giroud needs to be replaced

Every transfer window since Olivier Giroud arrived at Arsenal people seem to have been taking about signing a better striker or a world-class striker. The likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Edinson Cavani have constantly been linked with moves to north London.

Giroud has at times produced poor performances in big games, but he has also scored a lot of goals for the Gunners. The French striker has found the net 12 times this season, despite not always being first choice striker.

At least Merse was not suggesting that the Gunners need a striker to replace Giroud, rather a striker as cover for the former-Montpellier striker for the rest of the campaign.

Gunners title challenge off course

The Gunners title challenge has gone slightly off course with four Premier League games without a win and three games Arsene Wenger’s side have failed to find the net.

Arsenal have not been prolific in truth in the top-flight this season and are only the sixth highest scorers in the Premier League, but are still odds of 3/1 to win the title this season.

I have to admit I agree with Merse on this subject. I do believe that Arsenal needed to strengthen their forward-line, which is probably the area of the team that most needs strengthening at the moment.

Wenger seems to have the same excuse every transfer window that the right player was not available. It seems strange that other clubs can recruit players that strengthen their teams, but Arsenal cannot find the right players to strengthen theirs.

Is Merse right, should Arsenal have signed a striker in January?
