With Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitting his side’s form in the big away games has cost them the title, should he be looking to sign proven midfield talent to finally turn his side from underdogs into genuine title-chasers?
Seville’s Ivan Rakitic should be a player Wenger has on his shortlist. The Croatian international has enjoyed a superb season on a personal note, scoring 12 goals and making 10 assists from midfield.
The 26-year-old has made 76 key passes this season, more than Arsenal’s chief creators Mesut Ozil (71) & Santi Cazorla (67). He’s created more goals for Seville than any Arsenal player this campaign, and will be reeling with his side having missed out on a Champions League place.
Barcelona midfielder Alexandre Song should be another name the Gunners look to sign. He spent six years with the London side before joining the Catalan giants, but has only made 12 league starts this season in a side poised to end the campaign trophyless.
Song, 26, hasn’t been first-choice for Barcelona, but would bring a lot to the Arsenal team. He made 11 assists in his last season at the Emirates (2011/12), while boasting 100 tackles and 66 interceptions.
It’s unknown how much the pair would cost, but there’s no doubt they could make a big difference to the spine of an ageing midfield, with Arteta turning 33 next season and Flamini 31 in 2014/15.
With Arsenal 8/15 to win the FA Cup this season, trophy success could well bring a host of names to the Emirates for the new campaign.
