Arsenal given Zinchenko boost as Manchester City close in on left-back signing

Reported Arsenal target Oleksandr Zinchenko has mostly been filling in at left-back for Manchester City since he returned to the Etihad from his loan spell with PSV Eindhoven in 2017, with Benjamin Mendy, Pep Guardiola’s only designated option for a long time now, first hampered by frequent injuries and now suspended indefinitely due to accusations of numerous counts of rape. His proposed arrival to the Emirates would surely come in very handy with that in mind as Kieran Tierney has injury issues of his own and manager Mikel Arteta apparently not happy with what he’s seen from Nuno Tavares so far.

Arsenal are believed to have expressed an interest in the 25-year-old Ukraine international who inspired his national team to a highly emotional victory over Scotland in the semifinals of the World Cup play-offs. And as they prepare to take on Wales in the final, City are reportedly closing in on the £30 million signing of Marc Cucurella from Brighton and Hove Albion, and if they complete that deal, Zinchenko’s game-time at the Etihad will be at risk of being significantly reduced.

Meanwhile, at Arsenal, Zinchenko would surely be given a chance to play in midfield, his preferred section of the team, whenever Tierney is fit. Like Gabriel Jesus, Arsenal’s primary target this summer, Zinchenko is well aware of the way Arteta does his job, having worked with him at City.

Zinchenko has made a total of 128 appearances for City in all competitions so far, scoring twice and providing 12 assists. There are two years left on his contract, and the price for his services isn’t likely to be small, but given the quality and the versatility of the player, it should be worth it as the Gunners seek to add respectable depth to their squad.
