There would not have been a single Arsenal fan at the start of the season that would have thought that the EFL Cup would quite possibly be their last likely option for winning a trophy, yet here we are.
Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest in an embarrassing 4-2 defeat, while they are a huge 23 points short of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. The Europa League is, of course, a viable option for a trophy, but they are some way short of making the final, with a number of very strong outfits in the competition still.
There is just a single game standing between themselves and the EFL Cup final, with a 0-0 scoreline from the first leg seeing them hold the advantage in the second, with a game at the Emirates Stadium still to come.
With Alexis Sanchez leaving the club, the club and its fans are in need of a boost, and winning any trophy would constitute this. Manchester City lie in wait in the final after they defeated Bristol City in the other semi-final and, while City have been the outstanding team this season, Arsenal will know that a final is not a game in which holding the tag of favourite always translates into a victory.
Chelsea are in a similar situation in the league with a lot of space between themselves and leaders, but they are still in with a chance of winning the FA Cup and the Champions League. While Antonio Conte is also under huge pressure at Stamford Bridge, it is Wenger and his side that need to win this game more.
Yet another defeat would see their season take another turn for the worst, and Wenger cannot afford for this to happen.
