According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal have had a big money bid for Dortmund’s highly-rated winger Ousmane Dembele. The 20-year-old is one of the hottest prospects in the European game. It seems the Gunners are one of the teams hoping to sign the winger.
Arsenal are reportedly still in talks to sign Monaco winger Thomas Lemar. However, a deal still does not seem close. Dembele looks to be a viable alternative, although the 20-year-old is attracting attention from elsewhere.
A very good debut campaign at Dortmund
Dembele experienced a superb debut campaign at Dortmund last season after a £13million move from Rennes last summer. The 20-year-old scored ten goals and also produced 18 assists for BVB in 46 appearances in all competitions.
One major facet that stood out about Dembele last season was his versatility. The youngster can play anywhere across the attacking midfield positions. His versatility would be a major asset for any team looking to sign the French star.
Arsenal face major competition
Unfortunately, if the Gunners were interested in signing the French youngster they would probably be behind Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona in the queue. Reports from Spain suggest that Barcelona are set to use some of the money received from the sale of Brazilian star Neymar to sign the winger.
Dembele has previously been linked with moves to Catalonia. However, Neymar leaving frees up funds. It also frees up a space in the Blaugrana starting line-up for the new season. Arsenal are unlikely to be able to compete with the Catalan giants considering the amount of money they have available to them.
Arsenal are haggling with Monaco over a deal for Lemar. A bidding war with Barcelona is unlikely to be one which they would win.
Dembele unlikely to sign for Arsenal
Dembele is maybe the sort of young player that would improve the Arsenal team. However, it seems the youngster is not destined to move to Barcelona and Arsenal will need to keep chipping away at Monaco in an effort to sign Lemar.
Arsenal now seems likely to field just two new signings in their opening game of the campaign next Friday when they host Leicester, a game the Gunners are odds of 2/5 favourites to win.
No doubt the Gunners will continue to be linked with new signings until the summer transfer window shuts at the end of the month. How many new faces arrive at the club only time will tell.
Did Arsenal really have a chance of signing Ousmane Dembele?
