According to the London Standard, Arsenal are considering a late window bid of around £26.9million for Besiktas and Croatia centre-back Domagoj Vida. The Turkish club are understood to be willing to sell the 29-year-old this summer.
Vida impressed at the World Cup and helped his country to the final, where they suffered a 4-2 defeat. Alongside legend in his own lunchtime Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren, the defender formed a formidable central defensive partner for Zlatko Dalic’s side.
Vida’s performances in Russia reportedly attracted the interest of Premier League duo Everton and Liverpool. It seems Arsenal were also impressed by the centre-backs displays. The defender is believed to fancy a move to England and the Premier League.
Arsenal defensive options not great
The Gunners defensive options have been questioned in recent seasons. Defensive stalwart France international centre-back Laurent Koscielny will miss the start of the season through injury.
Germany international Shkodran Mustafi’s performances for the Gunners have been highly unconvincing, while youngster Rob Holding has yet to convince that he can perform at the highest level. Greek youngster Konstantinos Mavropanos has also not played that much first-team football for the Gunners.
Greek international Sokratis has arrived at the north London club this summer from Dortmund. The experienced star is likely to be first choice centre-back alongside Mustafi or Holding for the team’s first Premier League game of the season against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners decided to loan out Calum Chambers on Tuesday to Fulham. It seems Unai Emery has a dilemma on his hands to who to pick at the heart of his defence this season. Signing Vida would definitely strengthen the Gunners defensive options. He is the sort of no-nonsense defender they have been missing in recent years.
Players linked with the Emirates exit
With the summer transfer window shutting at 5 PM on Thursday, there could still be plenty of transfer activity in north London in the next few days. However, the majority of action could be players head out of the club.
Spanish striker Lucas Perez looks set to make a £5million move to West Ham. Meanwhile, goalkeeper David Ospina and forward Danny Welbeck could also depart before the transfer deadline.
The Gunners had a small transfer budget this summer, and they look to have spent it. Any move for Vida would most likely be funded by the sales of unwanted players, who are now surplus to requirements.
Will Arsenal make a late window move for Vida?
