After revealing their list of players to be released with Eddie Nketiah on it, Arsenal confirmed that there is a chance for the young striker to remain at the club as there are contract talks in progress at the moment.
Nketiah started the season as the third-choice striker behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in the pecking order, but the Gunners lost Aubameyang in January after another bout of disciplinary problems with the Gabonese, and Lacazette has already secured a return to his former club Olympique Lyon as a free agent.
Nketiah was on course to follow in their footsteps, mostly as a result of a perceived lack of game-time, but as the Premier League season reached its end, news broke about him potentially changing his mind and being open to the idea of signing a new deal. In the last seven league matches of 2021/22, the 23-year-old bagged five goals as Lacazette faced gradual fadeout from Mikel Arteta’s plans.
The club that will have been disappointed with this turn of events is Crystal Palace, believed for a while to be leading the race for his services, but Arteta will obviously be thrilled when the new deal is signed and sealed. Nketiah’s presence in his squad along with an expected new striker opens up a number of possibilities for the coach in terms of system and selection.
Nketiah actually started out at the Chelsea academy, before joining Arsenal’s Under-18 side in 2015. He was promoted to the senior squad in the summer of 2019 and spent the following six months on loan with Leeds United. For Arsenal, he’s so far played a total of 92 matches and scored 23 goals, with two assists to his name as well.
It seems there will be plenty of chances for him to make those numbers more impressive over the coming years and there’s no real doubt about him having the ability to do so.
