This could story has rumbled on for the last few weeks, yes it is the Arsenal chasing Monaco winger Thomas Lemar. According to the Daily Mirror, the Gunners are now confident of doing a deal with the French champions worth £45million.
The report claims that the young winger could sign a contract that will see him earn around £100,000 per week in north London. The Gunners are reported to have had two bids rejected by Monaco for Lemar so far, but the two clubs are now reportedly in negotiations to come to a compromise deal.
Made a big impression last season
Lemar made a major impact with Monaco last season, scoring 14 goals and producing 14 assists for the French champions. The youngster had shown signs of last season’s form in the season 2015/16 campaign for Monaco when he scored five times and produced three assists.
However, last season was truly a breakthrough campaign for Lemar, who was a former teammate of Chelsea’s defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante at Caen’s before moving to Monaco two summers ago.
A lot of money
I think I may be channelling my inner Arsene Wenger when I say this, but £45million seems a lot of money for such a young player. I know the transfer market at the moment is crazy and Lemar is an exciting young player.
However, the fee of £45million still seems a lot of money to pay for a young player who has no Premier League experience.
Many crazy deals have been conducted this summer by Premier League clubs, but £45million is only a tad less than the Gunners paid for record signing Alexandre Lacazette and he has been prolific in the French top-flight for much of the decade.
Would be an exciting signing
Putting aside my misgivings about the fee, I do believe Thomas Lemar could well turn out to be a good signing for the Gunners. Whenever I saw him play for Monaco in the Champions League, he seemed to offer a big threat to the opposition defence.
An Arsenal forward line of Lemar, Alexis Sanchez, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil is a very exciting one for Gunners fans.
We hear that Arsenal are set to sign somebody every day seemingly from various papers and media outlets. However, a number of credible sources seem to be reporting this story, so who knows maybe the Gunners are set to complete their third major signing of the summer.
Is Thomas Lemar worth £45million?
