Arsenal are reportedly on the long list of clubs keeping a close eye of RB Salzburg’s Dominik Szoboszlai.
Having gone through the ranks at Videoton and MTK in his homeland of Hungary, Szoboszlai moved to Austria in 2017 to join the ranks of Salzburg’s Under-18 side. He spent the following season on loan at FC Liefering and returned to Salzburg in the summer of 2018. Since then, he has gone on to represent the reigning Austrian Bundesliga champions on 74 occasions in all competitions, directly contributing to 55 goals (22 goals, 33 assists) so far. This season, he has five goals and nine assists in 13 games at the moment. A fast wide player, the 20-year-old is mostly deployed on the left side of midfield, though he can play more centrally if need be, as well as on the right. He has also played as a wide forward. Packing a truly formidable shot, he is a fantastic set-piece taker.
As reported by Sport Witness, the release clause in his contract, valid until the end of the 2021/22 season, stands at €25 million (around £22.5m). The amount, obviously not too high for a player of his age and talent, has already attracted the attentions of a number of clubs across Europe, Arsenal among them. Like Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, he is expected to use Salzburg as a stepping stone on his way to a much bigger stage.
The report also relays an interesting piece of information – that his agent has already been in contact with the Gunners, but when the time for a move comes, the competition for his signature will likely be fierce. There is strong interest from Italy, where both AC Milan and Napoli are considering a swoop at the right time.
