According to the Times, via the Metro, Manchester United’s French forward Anthony Martial wanted to join Arsenal in January as part of the deal that saw Alexis Sanchez head for Old Trafford.
However, reportedly United boss Jose Mourinho blocked the move and Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan moved to north London instead. The former Dortmund star has enjoyed a decent start to life with the Gunners.
Frustrated young talent
Martial is no doubt a top young player with immense potential. However, the 22-year-old has struggled for regular first-team football this season, especially since Sanchez’s move to the Red Devils.
Martial has made just 16 starts in the Premier League this season, while also coming off the substitute’s bench on 11 occasions. A record of 11 goals and seven assists in all competitions is not bad for a player who does not start every game.
The forward is reportedly happy to stay at United. However, he will only stay if he plays more regular first-team football.
Would he fulfil his potential under Arsene Wenger?
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was in the past one of the best coaches in the European game for developing young players. He helped develop the likes of Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry into world-class players.
However, recent years some supposedly talented players have struggled to fulfil their potential under the veteran French boss, with England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the main example of that.
Martial may believe that Wenger can develop his talent. However, many Gunners fans would question whether Wenger is the best man to help any player to fulfil his potential nowadays.
Could be a top player with first-team football
Martial has shown flashes of brilliance for Manchester United and Monaco prior to his switch to Manchester. If he was playing regular first-team football, there is a chance he could become a top player.
It seems the forward is unlikely to get that Manchester United under Mourinho. Moves to both Juventus and Bayern Munich have been rumoured. However, a move to Arsenal could be the perfect solution for the winger.
For now, he is a United player and could start for the Red Devils at Bournemouth this evening, a game United are odds of 17/20 to win.
Anthony Martial would be a good signing for the Gunners in my humble opinion. Signing another forward player is not the Gunners priority this summer, though.
