Granit Xhaka has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal, the club have confirmed on their official website.
The future of the midfielder was somewhat uncertain after the departure of Arsene Wenger, but the man who has replaced the Frenchman has assured the Swiss international that he will remain an important player for the team.
Xhaka joined Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016, and so far he has made 94 appearances and scored seven goals for the Gunners from his role in central midfield. A relentless player, packing a powerful shot and boasting great passing range and vision, and his new deal is nothing but excellent news for Arsenal as they strive to overcome the difficulties that come with being in transition.
Emery has already indicated that the central role in his team will belong to Aaron Ramsey, but the grit and determination of Xhaka will be of great value to the Welshman. Lucas Torreira will also provide an excellent option in the middle of the park should his transfer get completed this summer. The Uruguay international made a short cameo and performed quite well for his national team in their World Cup opener against Egypt.
Jack Wilshere is also keen on staying at the club but the negotiations are still ongoing as he seeks assurances over his own role in the team.
One man who is extremely happy about Xhaka’s new deal is Arsenal’s new full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner. The former Juventus man plays for Switzerland alongside Xhaka and he’s looking forward to extending their work together to the club level.
Switzerland open their World Cup campaign on Sunday against Brazil who are considered among the top favourites to win the tournament, and Xhaka will have to be on top of his game to be able to thwart their immense quality from showing.
