It seems that Everton striker Romelu Lukaku’s future on Merseyside is in doubt after it was revealed on Tuesday that he will not sign a new deal with the Toffees. It means that the Premier League’s top scorer could be available in the summer. The 23-year-old would definitely not be cheap to sign, but maybe he could be the answer to Arsenal’s striker conundrum.
A new striker a good place to start the rebuild
Arsenal fans have felt that the team has needed a top-class striker for the past few seasons. With big changes set to take place this summer, as the squad arguably needs a rebuild.
A prolific striker would be a great place to start the rebuild and it is hard to argue that Lukaku would not represent a good signing. At 23 years old the striker is regarded as one of the players with the most potential to become world-class in the future.
He has been prolific at Everton, even when the Toffees have been struggling in the past few seasons. If the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil stayed then he would get excellent service to fulfil his potential.
Some would argue that the big striker does not fit into the Arsenal style of player. However, Lukaku’s game has developed well over the past few seasons. He is now a far better all-around player and has thrived for the Toffees seemingly with every style of football the team has played.
Major rivals for Lukaku
If Lukaku was available in the summer and Arsenal were interested, then the Gunners would face stiff opposition for the striker. A mooted fee of around £70million is unlikely to put off the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and PSG.
At the moment Lukaku’s former club Chelsea are hot favourites to sign Lukaku in the summer. The Blues were linked with a move for the Belgian international last summer. With Diego Costa’s long-term future at the club in doubt, Lukaku may be seen as a good replacement.
A move for Lukaku unlikely
For me, Romelu Lukaku would be a good signing, depending on the fee of course. He is still young and has major potential to become a world-class striker. He seems to score goals at a very good rate too.
Unfortunately, even if Arsenal were interested in the striker, I can see Lukaku returning to Chelsea or even staying in the north west with Manchester United. Lukaku is a major talent is maybe the sort of player the Gunners need to be signing to get back on track.
Would Romelu Lukaku be a viable transfer target for Arsenal?
