According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal is interested in signing two wingers this summer in Juan Cuadrado and Antoine Griezmann. With other areas of the team in need of strengthening are wingers really what Arsenal needs this summer?
Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado impressed at the World Cup with Colombia, as the South Americans made it to the quarter-finals, before being knocked out by hosts Brazil. He collected four assists at the tournament as his country looked one of the more exciting teams at the finals.
Serie A outfit Fiorentina have acquired full ownership rights of the player this summer in order to ward off interest from elsewhere, or sell for a big profit this summer. It seems that Arsenal have bid around 28million euros (£22million), while the Viola want closer to £35million.
Although Cuadrado is primarily a winger, he can also play as a right-back, which is maybe why the Gunners are interested in signing the World Cup star. His versatility could be a key asset, especially with the Gunners currently short of right-backs.
Another believed Arsenal target is Antoine Griezmann, who is also versatile, but again he primarily plays on the wing for both Real Sociedad and France. The 23-year-old has apparently been on the Gunners radar for a while and his World Cup performances seem to have only heightened their interest.
AC Milan are now sniffing around the impressive youngster and Rossoneri boss Filippo Inzaghi is apparently considering a move for the France international. An Arsenal move for Griezmann would seem like an unnecessary one with the number of players capable of playing in the youngsters positions already at the club.
However, Griezmann has been a long-term target of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, so maybe the story is reappearing because the veteran Arsenal boss has yet to make a move in the transfer market this summer.
Reported long-term Arsenal target Lars Bender seems to be back on the Gunners radar. A move for a defensive midfielder would make more sense to me. The Bayer Leverkusen star is rated around the £15million mark.
Both Griezmann and Cuadrado are good players, but the necessity for wingers at the moment is not great. Cuadrado being able to play full-back may prove useful, but after seeing his performances at the World Cup he is far more useful going forward and would be wasted at full-back.
The Gunners are expecting to challenge for the Premier League title next season and are odds of 9/1 to be successful in their quest for glory next season. However, to put in a realistic challenge next season Wenger needs to bring in the right players this summer, or we could be in for a disappointing season at the Emirates.
