Arsenal were held to a goalless draw by struggling West Ham at the London Stadium in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
The Gunners controlled the opening exchanges. However, the first attempt on goal did not arrive until the tenth minute. West Ham ‘keeper Adrian got down to comfortably save Alexis Sanchez’s effort.
On 15 minutes, West Ham winger Marko Arnautovic saw a headed effort ruled out for offside. Arsenal came forward again on 23 minutes. A good team move involving Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud resulted in the ball being played to Sanchez, whose deflected effort flew wide of the post.
At the other end, Arnautovic hit a high effort that ended up in the arms of Petr Cech on 27 minutes. A few minutes later, Sanchez found Alex Iwobi at a tight angle and his low effort hit the near post.
West ham saw a penalty appeal waved away, as Granit Xhaka and Manuel Lanzini clashed in the Arsenal penalty area. Wilshere saw an effort from 20 yards blocked by centre-back Winston Reid.
Xhaka tried his luck from 35 yards out on the stroke of half-time, but the striker failed to trouble Adrian with the effort.
The home side had the first chance of the second half on 47 minutes. Mark Noble produced a brilliant touch to knock the ball over Nacho Monreal and the midfielder found Arnautovic, who fired an effort wide of goal.
Two minutes later, Hector Bellerin attempted an effort on goal from long-range. However, the Spaniard put his effort wide of goal. Arsenal continued to dominate and Adrian produced a comfortable save from a long-range effort by Xhaka.
Giroud saw a headed effort deflect wide of goal from an Ainsley Maitland-Niles cross on 51 minutes. Mesut Ozil stabbed wide of goal ten minutes into the second half after a lucky bounce of the ball.
On 67 minutes, Arnautovic saw an effort cleared off the line after Petr Cech flapped at a Pablo Zabaleta cross into the area. With 20 minutes left on the clock, Jack Wilshere volleyed over from a knockdown from Giroud.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, a Mesut Ozil’s curled free-kick from long-range was kept out by Adrian. On 79 minutes, Angelo Ogbonna produced a block from a Hector Bellerin effort.
West Ham came close to nicking it in the last minute. Javier Hernandez found himself through on goal, only for his effort to hit the bar and on to the goal-line.
The effort was the last of the game, as the Gunners suffered a frustrating draw that leaves them seventh place in the Premier League table.
