Catalan daily newspaper Sport, usually well informed of everything that happens at Camp Nou, has moved to suggest that Arsenal and West Ham are both ready to offer Thomas Vermaelen an escape route from Barcelona.

The Belgian defender raised a couple of eyebrows as he returned to the club earlier than expected from his holiday, but rather than joining his teammates for pre-season training, he instead resumed his vacation.

According to Sport, Barcelona are ready to listen to offers for his services as he is currently fifth-choice centre-back in the squad, and a summer return to English Premier League could be on the cards.

According to Spanish publication Sport, via the Daily Telegraph, Arsenal could be about to make a move to re-sign Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, who only moved to Catalonia from north London two seasons ago.

The Belgium international has endured a difficult time at the Nou Camp through injury and has made just 21 appearances for the Spanish champions.

Doesn’t stay fit long enough

Vermaelen is a good centre-back when he is fit of course, which has not been often in recent years of his career. Barcelona brought him in to attempt to fill a void at the centre of their defence, but those old injury problems have hampered his career at the Nou Camp.

Ex-Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen could line up against the Gunners for Barcelona this week as manager Luis Enrique is forced into making a defensive change. Gerard Pique is suspended for the second leg of Barcelona’s Champions League last-16 clash with Arsenal, meaning either Jeremy Mathieu or Vermaelen will be given the nod to partner Javier Mascherano.

Signed from Arsenal in 2014, the Belgian international still hasn’t managed to claim a regular starting place in the backline, but he’s nevertheless a handy defender to have in the squad given his experience and technical ability. The 30-year-old has made only 10 La Liga appearances this season, amounting to little over 500 minutes of playing time, so it’s more likely Mathieu will start.

Manolas was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates as Arsene Wenger reportedly made him the primary target to replace Thomas Vermaelen, but it appears the Professor once again missed out on a quality player.

Does Arsene Wenger have to take the blame for lack of defensive reinforcements? 0

With Arsenal forced to name a makeshift backline ahead of their weekend against Hull City, does manager Arsene Wenger have to take the blame for not signing sufficient cover?

This summer, Wenger allowed experienced defender Thomas Vermaelen to sign for Barcelona, and prosing youngster Carl Jenkinson to join West Ham on loan, but in return only signed a 19-year-old defender in Calum Chambers.

Arsenal’s first-choice backline of Mathieu Debuchy, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Kieran Gibbs only had left-back Nacho Monreal and Calum Chambers as cover. Having such threadbare cover was an accident waiting to happen, and the gamble has backfired.

Gunners looking at free agents to strengthen defence 1

According to the Daily Mail Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is attempting to strengthen his defensive options by bringing in a free agent, with former-West Brom centre-back Diego Lugano and ex-Everton centre-back Joseph Yobo believed to be transfer targets.

Lacking

The Gunners are now short on defensive cover, which was quite evident prior to the transfer window closing. Arsene Wenger sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, but failed to replace him.

French full-back Mathieu Debuchy picked-up an ankle injury against Manchester City. That means that youngster Calum Chambers is likely going to come in at full-back, but that leaves the Gunners short on central defensive options.

Gunners reportedly tracking Celtic’s Dutch defender 0

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal could dip into the transfer market in January to sign more defensive cover. Laurent Koscielny’s recent injury worries have made the Gunners defensive resources look slightly flimsy. The Mail claims that Celtic’s Dutch star Virgil van Dijk could be a January transfer target.

Deadline enquiry

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was scouring the market for a new centre-back on deadline day and the veteran French boss was linked with moves for the likes of Ron Vlaar and Matija Nastastic. It is now believed that Wenger also made an enquiry about Van Dijk on deadline day, but it came too late for any move to happen.

Why did Wenger not strengthen the centre of his defence? 2

Posted on September 05, 2014 by David Nugent

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger now finds himself short of central defenders with worries over Laurent Koscielny’s fitness growing. The French centre-back has an Achilles injury, which if reports are to be believed could rule him out of the Gunners game against Manchester City a week on Saturday, in a game the Gunners are odds of 15/8 to win.

Shortage

When Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen left for Barcelona in the summer it left the Gunners with a shortage of centre-backs. Everybody could see there was not enough cover for first choice pair Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal has competition on their hands if they are looking to sign Greek international centre-back Kostas Manolas. The Gunners have been heavily linked with a £8million bid for the Olympiakos star.

Impressed
